Microarays facilitate high throughput screening for the presence of a large number f known functional genes in plants, animals, soils and other living organisms. The outcome variable is the expresssion level of a gene,a continuous variable, for example in soil sample. This talk summarises the usual approach to analysis of such data that biologists often use, outlines its possible limitations and proposes a statistically more sound approach to data analysis.
